Five Chinese Stroke-Order Rules for Beginners

Stroke order gives a child a repeatable way to build a character. Keep practice brief and demonstrate one rule at a time.

1. Top before bottom: finish the upper part before moving down.
2. Left before right: build the left side before the right side.
3. Horizontal before vertical: when strokes cross, the horizontal stroke often comes first.
4. Outside before inside: draw an enclosing shape before adding its centre.
5. Close an enclosure last: leave the final closing stroke until the inside is complete.

Keep the rule connected to meaning

Children remember a writing pattern better when they can hear the character and use it in context. Ask the child to say the sound, trace slowly, and then point to the character in a tiny bilingual sentence. Treat the rule as a guide, not a speed test.
