Hanzi vs. Chinese Characters: A Parent’s Guide

Hanzi is the common pinyin-based spelling of 汉字, meaning Chinese characters. “Chinese characters” is the plain-English term; “hanzi” is useful when a family is learning the vocabulary around Chinese writing.

What a young learner needs to know

A child does not need a terminology lesson before beginning. Start with the character as a meaningful shape and sound. Say the pronunciation, name a simple meaning, trace the strokes, and look for the character again in a short phrase or story.

Hanzi is not a separate alphabet

Hanzi are written characters that carry meaning and pronunciation. They work differently from an alphabet where letters primarily represent individual sounds. That is why a beginning routine benefits from combining visual recognition, listening, writing, and context instead of practising isolated symbols only.

Parent language: “Hanzi means the Chinese characters we are learning. We can look at one, say it, write it, and find it in a story.”
